Drawing Strength From Crisis

When I need to make a tough decision, I will first think about the ultimate goal that I aim to achieve through that decision. Then, I think about a specific moment in my life that was extremely difficult.

For me, that specific moment came on the eve of my surgery. I was given a few hours to visit my children before being admitted again. Feeling uncertain about the prospect of life after surgery, assuming I’d still be alive to tell the tale afterwards, all I could think about was what would happen if I wasn’t there for my children the next day.

Thinking about that moment encourages me as it shows me that I can survive even the worst that life has to throw at me and come out the other side. With that perspective, the concept of making a decision becomes far less intimidating.
